The Swain Elementary Outreach Program is a collaborative service offered by the Swain County School System and Meridian Behavioral Health Services. The purpose of the program is to provide intervention strategies for elementary school children who are at risk of being expelled or suspended due to violent and disruptive behaviors. The Outreach Program provides an alternative to school suspension through short-term placement in a self-contained classroom with the primary goal being to return to a standard classroom setting. Through multiple levels of intervention the program teaches respect for personal rights, becoming responsible for individual behavior, and relationship/social skills essential for success at school, home, and in the community. The program is specifically designed to address the diruptive, violent, and/or truant behaviors of children who can no longer be effectively educated in a traditional classroom. Children participate in the standard curriculum of study in a classroom of no more than 8 students with frequent individual instruction. A team of Community Based Service Staff monitor the individual student's behaviors throughout the day and provide prompts to display appropriate behaviors designated by specific program rules and appropriate social skills. Group, individual, and family therapy are provided by an on-site therapist focusing on life skills, processing conflicts and exploring healthy methods for managing personal needs. Family involvement is required throughout placement - with parent/guardians being asked to monitor completion of homework assignments, monitor home behaviors, sign daily behavior sheets, and meet with Outreach staff and therapist to report their observations and interactions.
